Message From the Executive Director

We would like to welcome you to the Web Site of Marcy-Newberry Association.

Dr. Benjamin Kendricks and Marcy Newberry kids

Marcy-Newberry Association has served residents of the West Side for over 120 years. We are a National Mission Institute of The General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church.

In 1883, Elizabeth Smith Marcy, a Methodist woman, assisted by a group of mission-minded women organized this Methodist-related Community Service Center. Ms. Marcy and her dedicated group of volunteers provided direct service to community residents, and actively worked for social and economic change.

The agency has played a major role in working with families in ABLA and Rockwell public housing. Today we are very active in working with public housing leadership as the Chicago Housing Authority's plan for transformation rapidly develops this community. Our objective in this work is to support as many families as possible so that they will have a place in these redeveloped communities. We are doing this by becoming a part of the redevelopment teams in as many developments as possible.

In September of 2001 we received the contract from the Chicago Department of Human Service to become the lead agency in all Chicago Housing Authority developments on the West Side under our Service Connector contract. Our objectives with this contract is to help all the residents who want to work, find employment, or any other service they may need to obtain family stability.

The agency is also working with University of Illinois at Chicago. in its efforts to build a new South Campus. We have obtained contracts to supply workers and apprenticeship for residents of the community.

While the agency has taken on these major tasks for the coming years, we know that we are following in the footsteps of our founder as we attempt to be a part of making the west side a better community for everyone.
